Joe Trohman has announced that he will be rejoining Fall Out Boy after taking a break from the band to focus on his mental health.
The guitarist shared the news of his return on Instagram, posting a photo of himself on stage and writing, “Hey everyone, I’m officially back! I want to thank everyone for the love and support while I took some time away to focus on my brain and get healthy for my family, my friends, and myself.”
He also took a moment to acknowledge and pay tribute to Ben Young, who had been performing live with the band in his absence. He praised Young for stepping up and filling in on the shows he missed, describing him as a true gentleman and scholar.
Now that he’s been able to take some much needed time away, Trohman is eager to rejoin the band and get back to doing what he loves. He expressed his excitement saying, “I’m stoked to be back in action, and I can’t wait to see everyone on tour this summer!”
When he had made the decision to take a break from the band, it certainly was not easy for Trohman. On the band’s Instagram page he stated, “Neil Young once howled that it’s better to burn out than to fade away. But I can tell you unequivocally that burning out is dreadful. Without divulging all the details, I must disclose that my mental health has rapidly deteriorated. So, to avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work, which regrettably includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell. It pains me to make this decision, especially when we are releasing a new album that fills me with great pride (the sin I’m most proud of).”
He continued, “So, the question remains: Will I return to the fold? Absolutely, one-hundred percent. In the meantime, I must recover which means putting myself and my mental health first. Thank you to everyone, including my bandmates and family, for understanding and respecting this difficult, but necessary, decision.”
It’s great to hear that Trohman has gotten to a better mental place and that he is ready to rejoin the band this summer on their “So Much For (Tour) Dust” tour – which will kickoff June 21 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
