Okay, this is RAD. And Gnarly.
The advances in modern medicine are truly incredible. Take guitarist Christian Nolen for example. A tumor was discovered on his brain after he noticed his dexterity while playing guitar was fading.
Ten days after the tumor was detected, they sent Nolen off for emergency surgery to try to remove it, which one strange little ask of the surgeon: “Can you play guitar while we saw your skull open and operate on your brain? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, you’ll be alive and awake, hope that’s not an issue”
Okay, that’s not really what the doctor said, but basically. Without getting too medically technical, because I have no comprehension of that, doctors will often request brain surgery patients to stay awake and perform tasks so that they can keep a close eye on their progress. According to Ricardo Komotar, M.D., director of the brain tumor program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. (That’s a mouthful)
When a tumor is involving or near a critical part of the brain — something that controls the ability to speak or understand language or move — we want to do the surgery awake to continually monitor the patient, so you know if you start to violate normal brain functions
How is this dude not scared half to death? If half my head was cracked open and my brain exposed, and you want me to think rationally, not pass out, and play the guitar while all this is happening?! Listen bud, you’d be lucky to get me to remember my name without pissing my pants.
Props to this dude who not only did it while seeming super chill, but also shredding some Deftones and System of a Down while doing it. Rock on dude. 🤘
