Foo Fighters released their 11th studio album, But Here We Are, their first since the tragic death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins.
According to Consequence,
“Described in a press release as “the first chapter of the band’s new life,” But Here We Are is “the sound of brothers finding refuge in the music that brought them together in the first place 28 years ago, a process that was as therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life.”’
Throughout the album, there is a theme of grief that reveals the feelings of loss and sorrow that the band has felt since Hawkins’ passing. The band produced the 10 songs on the album with the help of Greg Kurstin, Grammy Award-winning producer.
The words on the album ache with loss. Not only did lead singer Dave Grohl deal with the unexpected death of Hawkins last year, but his mother, Virginia, also passed away in the same year. One of the songs where the theme of grief is present, “Show Me How” features vocals from Grohl’s daughter Violet.
But Here We Are is an example of how music can be such a great way to express how we feel and honor our departed loved ones by creating art in their memory.
This year will be a busy one for Foo Fighters, as they will be making appearances at festivals like Bonnaroo, Louder Than Life, Austin City Limits, and Riot Fest in Chicago.
